Though the news that Bulgaria has capitulated will appear stale to many of our readers by the time the Journal reaches them, we cannot but record in these pages the very joyful news that the beginning of the end of this gigantic struggle has after all been brought about by the cessation of hostilities with Bulgaria at the beginning of October. This world-war owes its origin in the Balkans and it is appropriate that the first signal of the end should also come from there. Bulgaria's defection from the central powers means that the line from Berlin to Bagdad is broken and that Turkey will not wait long to follow suit. The southern frontier of Austria is also threatened.
