Among the millets grown in the Vizagapatam District ragi occupies a prominent place. It is raised over an area of 2,70,000 acres and forms part of the food for 75 per cent of the population. It is grown all the year round, either in the wet, garden or dry land; consequently its grain is avail- able at all times for the payment of wages in kind.
