Abstract


The germplasm types of Guine sagrass in the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. Coimbatore were evaluated for green fodder yield during 1980-82 along with the local variety. Six selections were found promising in 1982-83 and preliminary yield trials were conducted from 1985 to 1988. The selection TNGG 2 was found to be best recording a maximum green fodder yield potential of 250 t/ha/yr with mean yield of 160 t/ha/yr. The selection TNGG-2 recorded 172 cm height, 20-35 tillers, 26.64% crude fibre, 24.4 TDDM and 67.6% IVDMD. It is drought and shade tolerant. This selection was released as Co.1 Guinea grass in 1992 by Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. Coimbatore.
