A field experiment was conducted at Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatore during 1993-94 to study the effect of graded levels of N application (0, 100, 200, 300 and 400 kg ha) under two different row spacings (75 and 90 cm) in three promising midlate varieties of sugarcane (Co 86027, Co 86032 and Co 86038) on the nitrogen uptake, cane yield and sugar recovery in a sandy loam soil. Though the uptake of nitrogen increased with increased levels of nitrogen application the yield of cane did not show any significant increase beyond 100 kg N ha¹.
