The Tiruppur Cattle Show, 1919.

Abstract

The Fair at Tiruppur was instituted by some pious people of old in connection with the car festival for the Deity there. People from different part of India flock there once a year with the double purpose of worshipping the Deity in the temple and for buying and selling animals. It was a disappointment to the devotees this year that owing to the faction amongst the managers of the temple the idol was denied the pleasure of being pulled round the streets in a car. But this did not affect the show in the least, which was held on 12th, 13th and 14th June' This was first started by the Government at the suggestion of Lieut. Col. Gunn, the late Superintendent of the Civil Veterinary Department with a view to encourage pony and cattle breeding in different parts of Southern India.
