Abstract

Gingelly. (Til) or Sesame (Sesamum indicum Linn.) is one of the oldest of oilseed crops of the tropical and sub-tropical countries of the world. According to Hildebrandt, the plant is supposed to have originated in Southern and South- Western Africa. However, considering the large diversity of forms met with under cultivation, India and Japan are. recognised as important secondary centres of origin. In India the plant has been under cultivation as an oilseed from time immemorial.
