Tapioca is grown in large areas in Malabar and Travancore along the West Coast, taking advantage of the heavy rains from June to December. It is serving as a subsidiary food crop for the poorer classes of people, particularly in lean years. It is also an efficient substitute for rice to some extent, supplying the necessary carbohydrates. The accompany- ing statement furnishes the food values of rice and tapioca, based on the average yields obtained in the Madras State and the food values given in published literature.
