Water and nutrients are more often the limiting factors in maintaining or improving crop production. The capacity of soil to hold water, the movement and subsequent release of this water by the soil and its ultimate use by the plant have all been subjects of intensive study by agricultural scientists and irrigation engineers for a long time.
