Abstract


Cotton is a major commercial crop of the Madras State, covering an area of 11-2 lakh acres with a total annual produc- bion of 3-6 lakh bales of lint. It comprises chiefly two commercial ypes-Karunganni, a variety of desi, almost invariably grown with the rains and Cambodia, a variety of American Cotton, first ntroduced from Indo-China in 1905. The latter is grown both under rrigated and rainfed conditions.
