A detailed study conducted on the alkali soils of the Amaravathy Ayavut is reported in this paper. The study lins revealed that the main factors responsible for the gouesis of theso alkali soils are the poor drainage, topographically low lying situation and the higher water table. High correlation exists between pH and exchangeable sodium percentage in these soils. Soil pH has been suggested for their diagnosis. Application of gypsum at 2 tons/sore, with green manure at 5,000 1b./acre along with a goneral improve- ment of the drainage system have been recommended for the reclamation of the soils.
