For evolving selective factors for yielding capacity, plant breeders often employ such indices as ears and tillers or between grain and straw weights in cereals, and number of bolls per plant, number of seeds per boll, weight of lint per seed and ginning percentage in cotton (Panse, 1949). These selective factors are based on the correlation of characters with yield and with each other. Correlation of characters serves as a measure and forms the basis of selection index as it gives the strength of relationship between the characters studied. Correlation studies are, therefore, an important asset to the crop breeder.
