Abstract

Let me in the first place thank the President and members of this Union for having done me the honour of asking me to preside on this occasion. I cannot claim to be an agriculturist but I do claim to be a chemist, intensely interested in agriculture, and I think you will agree that agriculture is becoming more and more a branch of applied biochemistry. Deeper, however, than my scientific inte- rest in agriculture is my desire to see, if possible, some miti- gation of the ills of India through the application of scienti fic thrift to the uses of agriculture.
