SELECTION CRITERIA FOR YIELD IN PROSO MILLET (PANICUM MILIACEUM L.)

Abstract

A field experiment was conducted during kharif 1985 to study genetic variability and path analysis in fifty accessions of proso millet germplasm. There was a significant amount of variability for all the thirteen characters studied. Heritability estimates varied from moderate to high for all the traits. High heritability and expected gene.c advance were observed for panicle weight and grain yield per plant. Grain yeild per plant exhibited significant and postitive association with all the characters except days to maturity, peduncle length and protein content. Path coefficient analysis indicated that harvest index, panicle weight, seeds per secondary branch of raceme and 1000 grain weight had maximum direct effect on grain yield.
