The genus Pennisetum L. Rich is a fairly large genus of annuals and perennials, consisting of 50 tropical and sub- tropical species distributed in Asia, Africa, Southern Europe and America Pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum (L.) Leeke) is the most important constituent of this genus. It is an annual small millet grown for grain, but can also serve as a quick growing forage crop under irrigation. Unlike sorghum, there is no risk of HCN poisoning at all stages of growth. But the maximum green fodder yield potential ranges from 15 to 20 t/ha only
