AN ANALYSIS ON DEMAND FOR AND SUPPLY OF AGRICULTURAL LABOUR IN THIRUVAIYARU TALUK

Abstract


A study was conducted in Thiruvaiyaru taluk of Thanjavur district with 98 sample farms with the objective of: to study the demand for and supply of agricultural labour, level of family labour employment and the problems associated wih them. The study revealed that labour force ratio was 65.58 per cent. Total labour used per ha was 184.21 mandays, of which casual labour accounted for 70.06 per cent and family labour 20.91 per cent. Total labour employment per farm was 776.22 mandays. Labour requirment for Kuruvai paddy per ha. was 167.90 mandays and for Thaladi paddy it was 173.59 mandays. Peak labour requirment was during the months of September to November. Unemployment and under employment were the major problems besides low wage rate and absence of social service benefits.
