In India, drought has occurred frequently over the past 120 years, affecting large areas of the country. The South-West monsoon supplies rainfall to North India, while the North-East monsoon supplies more than 60% of the annual rainfall to Tamil Nadu in Southern India. Due to the variability of the North-East monsoon, floods and droughts are common in Tamil Nadu. Drought refers to the dryness of the atmosphere or storage of water over an extended period and can cause mild damage or even death through famine. In this study, rainfall data for 75 years recorded at the Tamil Nadu Rice Research Institute observatory was used to estimate the frequency of drought and flood occurrence in Cauvery Delta Zone and suggest viable strategies to mitigate their effects.
