Studies on genetic variability in F2 population of pigeon pea

Abstract


Pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.) is a major food legume grown in tropical and subtropical regions, including India where it is the second most important legume crop. In India, it is cultivated in several states, including Tamil Nadu where it is grown on 0.06 million hectares with a productivity of 658 kg per hectare. Genetic variability is a key factor in crop improvement and breeding programs. In this study, six F2 populations of selected hybrids were raised at the Millet Breeding Station of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University in Coimbatore. Observations were taken on various plant characteristics, including days to flowering and maturity, plant height, number of branches and clusters per plant, pod length, number of seeds per pod, 100 seed weight, and seed yield per plant.
